Activities

Talked about how we can work with our breathing to influence our mind.

Dirga Swasam - with hand on abdomen and hand on chest.

Talked about the stress response, introduced calming practices: Extended Exhalation, as well as a practice from Dr. Mala Cunningham (hands behind head, gaze to the left, pause and wait for a yawn, sigh or deep breath, then repeat on the other side).

Introduced Nadi Shodhana to balance energy.

Mr. Garrett talked about having LBP - headaches. Guided participants through netra vyayamam to release tension in eye muscles as well as neck and low back. Also talked about how working with calming the breath can influence the experience of pain.

Client/Group progress summary

Got thrown a curveball today. Knew this was the first day of the next 12-week semester, and just last week had given the volunteer coordinator my availability to officially have me on the #39 schedule. As I arrived, one of the music therapists told me yoga was not on the schedule this semester - a therapist running a psychotherapy group said I could lead a practice with her participants.

3 adult males:

Mr. Garrett - very rajasic, stood and paced around the room for the first 15 minutes. Engaged with the practices, asked questions and seemed very interested in the pranayama practices.

Caucasian male, early 30's - quiet, masked facial expressions, tamasic energy - engaged with the practices.

African american male, early 30's - sat in the back, arms crossed, did not engage with the practices but observed. Did close his eyes during shavasana.

Reflection and self-evaluation

I felt I adapted as best as I could to the unforseen circumstances. As all three of them had some mobility challenges and has signed up for psychotherapy, I felt that focusing on pranayama would serve them.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
Plan for next session

Not sure. I've messaged the volunteer coordinator to find out if she would like me to teach in one of the other buildings, or do I need to wait until the next semester. Fearful this impacts my ability to complete the case study.
