Presenting Problemloss of strength and flexibility, COPD, sleep apnea, she holds her breath often, knee arthritis, depression, anxiety, asthma, mild panic attacks, alcoholism (sober since 2012)
Physical

She has loss of strength and flexibility, COPD, sleep apnea, pre-diabetes and knee arthritis. I asked her to do some of the joint freeing movements to observe how she moves and she did all the movements on a chair. When standing she felt somewhat unbalanced. She had to hold the chair to lift one leg.
She is waiting for a CPAP from her insurance.
I noticed her hand was trembling.
Because she has so many issues, the focus will be on calming her mind, sleep apnea, losing weight, strengthening, and stretching her body.

Client/Group goalsbody strength and flexibility
Energetic

As a Kapha predominant (she had a diagnosis from an ayurvedic specialist), she moves slowly and with low energy. She sleeps at 1 am and wakes up at 10 am. Because of COPD, she walks up several times during her sleep. I suggested she could sleep earlier, because of Ayurvedic principles and she said she watches movies with her sister at night. We will come back later to this topic because I think the sleep routine can be very important to her.

Emotional

She has mild panic attacks when she is working. She works as a bookkeeper from home, 2-4 hours a day. She also said she has depression, anxiety, asthma, and alcoholism (sober since 2012)
She has a poor support system, besides her sister, she has her elder daughter and friends who live in New York.

Spiritual orientation and needs

She has a Christian background but considers herself spiritual rather than religious. She believes in God but struggles with Christianity. God is part of her everyday life.
She is a non-active reiki master. She said she believed she was meant to be a light worker, but was derailed by alcohol. She said she “knows” things and can use her energy to remove someone’s headache. She sees herself as an empath. She learned how to shut off and not to be influenced too much by other people’s energy.
She meditates. She said during her meditations, she does breathing awareness, concentrating in something like an apple, and releasing other thoughts. I suggested that she could think of something that elevates her spirit rather than an apple. Maybe an image of something that reminds her of God.

Intellectual / Sense of self

She likes to talk with her sister, an English professor, and she has been reading a lot lately. She has been exploring Ayurveda. Most of the time she spends in thought, calm, curious thoughts, not positive or negative.

Yoga philosophy/wisdom research reference(s)

SAT CHIT ANANDA concept in the Upanishads.
https://www.sanskritimagazine.com/sat-chit-ananda-philosophy-upanishads/
“So we see how the ultimate reality expounded in the Upanishads, Brahman, is Pure Existence–Consciousness–Bliss, Sat Chit Ananda. Existence, consciousness, and bliss are not qualities or properties of Brahman. It is not that Brahman exists, but that It is existence itself. Not that Brahman is a conscious entity, rather It is consciousness itself. And not that Brahman is happy, It is bliss itself. It is the source of all happiness.”

I used this during the assessment because it’s very healing to know one is not their body dis-eases, they are what is permanent behind those layers. And she said she can visualize herself as a healthy person, which is a step to a healthier life!

Questions for Mentor

If I quote the home medicines for sleep apnea that Vasant Lad suggested in his book “The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Medicines”, am I stepping out of my scope of practice?

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
