Homework assignment to client/group

1. client is to walk outdoors (supervised as she has tried to run away in the past) in the early morning or early evening (with sun protection), focusing on the nature around her. There is a park close to her house and parents agree to take her daily.

2. mother agrees to use sound to help AN stay calm daily and to try it as well when she looks as if she is becoming agitated.

3. discontinue watching horror movies, and television as much as possible, as it can increase the vata element, and this seems to already to in excess.

Activities

We discussed the client and her mother's thoughts about using mind body medicine. We talked about how she has been doing in general and what has been helping or worsening her condition. It was discovered that she was watching horror movies regularly and that she does not spend much time outdoors. In addition, she did not have much time/space to socialize with her own friends from school.

We spent most of the session gathering information but I was able to use a toy to engage AZ's more playful side and discovered her love of dance and music. Mother and client of Chinese background. Discussed concepts in Chinese medicine, which also exist in the yogic tradition, of the elements existing within the individual. Discussed the need for engagement with the earth element given the client's difficulty with feeling grounded in the present and hallucinations. Encouraged forest bathing or nature walking in which she is if focused on the natural world.

Client/Group progress summary

This was among our first sessions, and the client's progress will be gauged over time. She did some engagement in the session today but was also distracted at times. It was clear that her behaviors due to schizoaffective disorder have been distressing to her and have made her feel disappointment with herself. She tended to look brighter as I spoke with her alone or if I used her Chinese name instead of her English name.

Reflection and self-evaluation

I was myself, a bit challenged by this client's presentation. It was clear she suffers from a severe schizoaffective disorder and her family is new at handling this illness. They are of low resources, however, they genuinely want to be helpful. There was a strange juxtaposition of their respect for my opinions and my being newer to certain yogic ideas and techniques. I gained confidence as we did some practices and as I provided education to the client and family. I was taken by how receptive they were to the information. There is a language barrier, but I suspect there is a lot of cross over between the teachings of Chinese medicine and Integral Yoga Therapy.

Overall, I look forward to spending time with this client.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
Plan for next session

1. Review what was able to be done of homework from this session.
2. Attempt to engage in dance practices which engage the sacral and root chakras.
3. Consider incorporating pratipaksha bhavana into client's thought processes; will have to gauge for mental
readiness for this.
