Presenting ProblemChronic stress, Idiopathic Hypersomnia and Degenerative Disc Disease
Physical

Began with JAPA warm-up series for joint mobilitiy, body awareness and relaxation. Asanas including Sun Salutations, Standing and Floor poses with a focus on hip openers. Yoga Nidra to experience deep relaxation and body and breath connection.

Client/Group goalsClient's goal is to be her best self and effectively manage her daily stress.
Energetic

Client is a shallow breather. Discussed pausing and connecting with breath to activate parasympathetic nervous system and return to present moment. Offered 3-part breath to connect with body and breath sensations, then experience energetic balancing through Alternate Nostril Breathing. Explained that the breath is able to support her with shifting her energetic state.

Emotional

She's very driven and feels overwhelmed at times with her various responsibilities. Little to no self-care except when medical issues arise. Very focused on others and their needs. Needs to work on self-acknowledgement and being / doing enough. Also needs to

Spiritual orientation and needs

Client is agnostic. She's a loving, thoughtful and kind person. Open to mindfulness and personal growth. Needs to focus on self-care.

Intellectual / Sense of self

Client is over-committed and seems to operate in a deficit. What is enough? Am I enough? No sense of Santosha.

Raja Yoga – Niyama Santosha – discuss teaching of Acceptance / Contentment. We had brief discussion about her constant striving and drive to be her best. I asked what’s enough? She didn’t know. Santosha can support her to accept and appreciate the present moment - realizing that it’s complete in and of itself. It can also cultivate mindfulness and possibly gratitude as she moves through her day.

Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH) is a relatively rare and recently identified sleep disorder. There are two types: IH with long sleep times and IH with short sleep times. This condition is currently treated primarily by medication. There are no available studies or research articles on either PubMed or Google Scholar related to IH, mindfulness or CBT. There are a number of studies related to Yoga benefiting those with other sleep disorders, which typically presents as insomnia.

From a yogic lens, the inability to sleep is typically caused by an energetic imbalance. As such, I’ll offer some practices to support client to activate Relaxation Response and calm her nervous system. In addition mindfulness practices are intended to ground her when she’s sleepy and Skull-shining Breath and Breath of Joy to help her feel energized when she’s feeling drowsy.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
