Yoga philosophy: swadhyaya
“Svadhyaya (self-study) is about developing a sense of introspection, of knowing the stories and habits that run us. It’s so important to be able to make different choices because we know these habits and know we are more than these. One year for Christmas, my brother and I gave my father a diamond ring. We hid it inside seven boxes and delighted in watching as my father opened box after box until he came to the last one that held the ring.
That’s the image I have of self-study: We have to unwrap all the layers until we reach the diamond that is the true Self within. That’s also a reminder to our Western minds that there’s nothing to attain; it’s here within us. It’s a letting go process that I think we really see in self-study.” Deborah Adele

Client/Group progress summary
He didn’t practice the 3-part breath and did JAPA just once.
He says he needs to stretch his wrists and sometimes hang on the bar for more stretch. He didn’t do all the joint freeing exercises for his writs because they were painful. I showed him the web-claw-beak-paw exercise, and he loved it. His wrist pain was 2 (1-10 veterans scale).
She said his wife is mad at him and this gets him stressed. They have not talked since the day before the class. We talked about swadhyaya, and how being aware of his mind’s reactions can be good to avoid arguments in his relationship with his spouse.
He wants to be challenged. He asked to practice the tree pose next time.
He said he would never thought he would need a chair for Sun Salutation, he used to practice the classical version when he was younger. Because of his wrist, he could not put weight on his hands in a classical downward dog, and he was not happy with that.
Reflection and self-evaluation
I had planned to talk about Pratipaksa Bhavana today, but he needed swadhyaya this time to analyze his thoughts and know that he and his wife are both a spark of the infinite, they are not their thoughts or whatever they are arguing about. The Self-discovery takes us to uncover the real Self, our essence.
This session was online, but in the next in-person session, I’ll try a sun salutation on the floor, adapted to him, with no weight on his wrists.
Final Client/Group Report
After seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
