Homework assignment to client/group

1. continue to do 3 part breathing, and box breathing that she and therapist had worked on together.
2. notice when her accelerator/brake are being activated at home; attempt to use the 3 part breath when she wants to slow down the sympathetic nervous system or accelerator.
3. continue to work with replacing the thought that others will think she is strange or in some way not able to be liked with that she is liked.

Activities

1. client spoke of her symptoms and mother also contributed.
2. reviewed the concepts of the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic; used metaphor of accelerator and brakes in car. Client understood. Reviewed that sympathetic nervous system usually activated when people suffer from trauma.
3. asked client what kinds of practices most interested her. She said she had learned some breathing already from her therapist. Reviewed the breath practices she does, which is box breathing. Did this with her and then added on teachings of 3 part breathing.

4. Spoke about her feelings of shame of not being mentally well and feeling her family does not really want her around. Did meditative practice for 5 minutes (sitting with client) in which we each practiced observing our thoughts. She did this with eyes open. Afterwards, she wrote a few of her thoughts down on paper.

5. Thoughts included "Why am I here," "I don't want to be here." "She [referring to me] won't like me. She'll think I'm weird."

Discussed these thoughts with client. Asked client if there were any emotions associated with each of the thoughts. Emotions identified were fear and anger.

Asked client to choose a thought we would work with together. She chose, "She [referring to me] won't like me. She'll think I'm weird."

Asked client that when she observes the thought of "She'll think I'm weird," to replace it with the thought that is opposite in nature. "She'll think I'm totally awesome [her words]." Asked client to use this substitution every time she has a thought that she is weird or in some way not able to be liked.

Client/Group progress summary

The therapeutic relationship is being built; as the clients opens up more about her thoughts and emotions, it will make it easier to replace the negative thoughts with opposite positive ones.

Reflection and self-evaluation

This client seems to be one who will respond well to a therapy to prati pak shabavana. The concept of something else being true despite that one truth that she lives exists, seemed to make her feel calmer.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
Plan for next session

1. will continue to work with breath practices and replacing negative thoughts with opposite positive ones.
2. perhaps will use yoga nidra in the future as well.
