Homework assignment to client/group

1. client to continue with chart using prati pak shabavana for negative thoughts.
2. continue breath practices in AM and PM.
3. mom to also continue practices and to look into obtaining her own mental health providers.

Activities

Reviewed with client how she is doing and also spoke to mom. Last week attended school for the full week. Sleep has been improving; still 2-3 nights without good sleep but has been able to go to school despite that.

Mom discussed that she herself has been suffering from insomnia and asked if she could learn some techniques to help with sleep. Taught mom 3 part breathing and she stated she felt much calmer. She agrees to try this breath at night before bed and when she wakes in the AM; I recommended using a timer for breath practices as sometimes it is hard when learning a breath and focusing on doing it correctly, to also keep count of breath cycles. Mother agreed to try this.

Recommended mother also follow up with a therapist; she was advised to go to front desk and ask to be given contact information for Adult Mental Health clinic, where she would be able to access care. Mother was very thankful and left.

Reviewed client's chart of core beliefs, thoughts, and emotions and answered any questions she had. Reviewed her affirmations; went over the breath practices with her.

Asked client if she wanted her mother to be shown demonstration about the mind (crystal and bowl with food coloring demonstration). Client agreed and went to get her mother.

Performed demonstration using crystal and bowl of clear water, gradually filling the water with colors so that the water ends up being murky. Then picked up the crystal and showed its clarity/untouched nature to the audience. Spoke about the true nature of the human being having an ability to stay pure and healthy despite any thoughts or emotions that may be swimming around in the mind. The concept of separating the sense of self from what occurs in the mind or from the emotions seemed to make an impression.

I discussed the use of breath and mindfulness practices to help with this.

Both mother and client were encouraged to continue their breath practices and discussed plan to teach meditation in the future. Client was excited and mom was very grateful.

Client/Group progress summary

Client's level of anxiety has definitely decreased. She is sleeping better and has been able to tolerate attending school. Nightmares have decreased as well. It seems that with the buy in of the mother into the mental health care system (even if she ends up not calling the clinic to make an appointment), the client herself feels validated as having a mental illness and not being a loser.

Reflection and self-evaluation

I was surprised about the mom's request for help with insomnia. She really was thankful. There are countries in which mental health care is not readily available to those who wish to stay in the society and not in an institution. It is possible that over generations of no mental health care being available, some people who suffer from mental illnesses have learned to dismiss mental health as being a validated field which affects even their own selves.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
Plan for next session

1. consider teaching body scan to client; will make sure I maintain the space for the client only since there is a culture of abuse in the family which has its source from the mom.

Report briefly on each Kosha belowProgress toward wellness or worsening reported by the client/group or that you observed in the following areas
