Homework assignment to client/group

1. Supine Spinal Twist
2. Sphinx pose
3. Legs on the wall
4. Breathing Practice (alternate nostril breathing, 3-part breathing)
5. Guided Meditation
6. Legs against the wall or rest legs on the sofa

Activities

I began the session by asking Mark, Ugyen, and Terry if there had been any changes since we last met. Ugyen reported that a long-held supine spinal twist helped him relax and improved his digestion. Mark shared that his knee pain has improved after using a knee support brace for 10 days. Terry said his favorite poses are Child’s Pose and Downward-Facing Dog, where he feels a good stretch along the entire backside of his body.

I offered brief breath awareness practice to be at present moment and relax mind and focus to our practice. Then I lead a quick body scan to notice and accept any sensations, positive or negative. After the body scan, I invited them to a seated position and led them through three rounds of a neck and shoulder stretch that resembled a seated Tai Chi flow.

For asana practice, I led the following asanas to address their conditions.
3 rounds of slow-paced sun salutation as I am focusing on slowing down
Sphinx pose
Child pose (Mark practiced seated forward bending on the chair to avoid further stress to his knee)
cat-cow stretch – to notice the benefits after forward/back bending
Supine spinal twist (2+ minutes on each side)
Mini inversion – rest legs on the sofa for 3 minutes

I ended the session with 15 mins of yoga nidra to relax their physical body and mind.

Client/Group progress summary

All three clients are experiencing different conditions, and it’s not easy to see significant improvement in just three sessions. However, they have at least learned how to use breathing techniques to reduce stress, which is already a meaningful step forward. They experienced the benefits of breathing practice, which was a big improvement for them. Additionally, breathing and relaxation practices can help reduce pain.

Reflection and self-evaluation

I am more comfortable with group therapy now, but it may be challenging if more clients are in the group. Therefore I agree that the requirement specified 3 to 8 clients.
Also, I learned that it is best to use simple analogies to explain the wisdom teachings, I repeated sutra 1.2 to this group and they agreed to understand it well.
I told my clients that it is important to modify their practice based on their physical conditions and mental state referring to the modified chair yoga for Mark, by doing this way they can continue their practice comfortably.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
Plan for next session

I will continue this routine and observe the progress, I can add more practice when the timing is good.
