Homework assignment to client/group

alternate nostril breathing for relaxation and stress management .

Activities

I started with a tea ceremony , we had a chair and a mat.I started out by talking about ahimsa ( non violence ) to do no harm to your body and never go over the edge.
I introduced myself and talked about my own experience with stress and cancer and how I found yoga to be helpful to me.I invited the others to share their experience with yoga, breath work, mindfulness and any thing related to their stress or mental/physical condition.I emphasized confidentiality , that what is being said in the group stays in the group.
I talked about the goals of yoga, how breathing practices are so helpful to bring you from the sympathetic into a parasympathetic response of your nervous system. I asked permission to start with Om, since one client was not interested in spiritual practices.I asked them about their breathing and what they are noticing.
I started with 3 ohms and centering.
In the chair we started out with eye movements, head and shoulder rolls.Inhaling the arms up and down so I can observe and limitations.Cactus arms and chest opening .Moving on to chair circles.cat cow in the chair and slight twist.
I moved on behind the chair for a forward bend and back bend.
Since everyone in the group is mobile and can get to the floor put the chair aside and moved the floor.Staring out in savasana to feel the support of the floor then start working on hip movements with windshield wipers, hamstring stretches, happy baby pose, knee to chest pose always including breath and movement.from there to turn around to work on cobra pose and half locust pose , half bow pose, lying twist .
Guided yoga nidra
3 part breathing and alternate nostril breathing followed by a brief meditation.
Ending with a feedback round

Client/Group progress summary

the group enjoyed the the ceremony and getting to know me and each other, they where happy sharing their experiences with yoga and breath work. They enjoyed the postures and appreciated that we started out with a more gentle yoga.I was able to learn more about their limitations and since it is a small group, I was able to make small accommodations for each client. One client shared that she did not like o be in savasana very long and that she gets anxious .I kew that all the group members tend to be rajsic, so I did a guided meditation and made it a bit shorter.

Reflection and self-evaluation

This was my first small group for yoga therapy, I started out with 4 members , but 2 were not able to come this day.this allowed more time for making adjustments and teaching accommodations to each member. They said they enjoyed the group and felt safe. The like that was checking in with them frequently and they were able to talk during the session, they said that this is different form the yoga classes they went to in the past. They enjoyed the more individual approach.
I learned that I need to pay more attention to my time management. That for some clients it is uncomfortable to lay flat on the ground.I did make some accommodations.I am aware that I need to use eve more language to explain postures ,I feel more comfortable with demonstration, but I think this will improve with practice .
I was nervous about my first yoga therapy group but the feedback for the group members was that I did not show it.

Final Client/Group ReportAfter seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake)
Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report.
Plan for next session

One group member got anxious during savasna and we decided to try next session to have her in a reeling position instead of laying flat on the ground .
The other group member was not able to be on her knees for an extended time, even with additional blankets and double mat. The other group member offers to bring her pilates mat next time.
I will start to challenge them with a bit more strenuous poses.
I did ask them what pose they enjoyed the most.
for one client it was happy baby for the other one it was child pose, I will keep them in my next session.
