| Homework assignment to client/group | Continue the asana and movement practices explored today Continue exploring vairagya - especially around her relationship with son-in-law and daughter. Where can she let go - of the need to speak into a situation when often silence offers more support? Continue exploring abhyasa - how making time, even just a few minutes, for practices for her continue to help her heal. I offered the idea that caring for herself and choosing to spend energy on practices that nourish her koshas offer such a great example to her daughter and grandchildren. When her grandchildren come to her home, when she seeks her own healing, it offers a calm, healing space to her family. |

| Client/Group progress summary | The client has had a lot going on in the month of June. Her grandson had a severe salmonella outbreak that resulted in multiple hospitalizations (in fact he is expected to be released home in the next day), and has triggered an autoimmune disease. She has invested a lot of time and energy in supporting his healing as well as supporting her daughter. As she shared about her interactions with her soon to be ex-son-in-law her rate of speech increased, she was not breathing as deeply, and had more rajasic energy in her demeanor. She was also concerned with the results she received from her most recent Dexa scan, showing an increase from 3.3 to 3.5, indicating a worsening of osteoporosis. Her primary care doctor of over 20 years has recommended she begin Fosamax, over which she has some concerns. Even with these stressful situations she was encouraged that she checked in with her sponsor and continued regular attendance at AA meetings. Guided client through an awareness practice, after which she reported feeling calmer. She also shared she had begun to pay more attention to her behavior and how she talked about others, in particular her future ex SIL. She had a moment where she was speaking critically and happened to catch a glimpse of her reflection in a mirror - and did not like the energy and expression on her face. I shared sutra 1.12 - the importance of both abhyasa and vairagya. It is a balance of both exploring and continuing those practices that support her healing and growth, while letting go of the need to "fix" others - taking on responsibilities not meant for her to carry. She also admitted that self-care has been a struggle and she didn't continue her embodied Lord's Prayer practice. I reassured her she's still just beginning to care for herself and build new healing practices into her life. |
| Reflection and self-evaluation | I had not intended the check in to be so lengthy, but I felt it was important to give the client space to share and process some things - in a way let them go - so that she could use the rest of our time to focus on herself and caring for herself. After seeing such progress in her breathing and her thoughts our last session, I need to remind myself of how new she still is on her journey towards health and living more freely and lightly. |
| Final Client/Group Report | After seeing your client/group (for at least 4 sessions including interactive intake) Please remember practicum is a learning experience. You’ll learn more from sharing what’s accurate than from what might “look good”. Things you did well, not so well, problems and questions are all valid and useful tools to teach you. We can’t serve you to become the best clinician you can be if you don’t share your challenges and mistakes. Success is anything from which you learn. You can continue to add Session entries after submitting this Final Client/Group Report. |
| Plan for next session | Quick look at exercise and osteoporosis: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12200644/ The client mentioned that her doctor had recommended exercise as well for her osteoporosis, and previously had agreed that Kimberly could delay starting Fosamax if she had a regular routine. Since Kimberly had not created a regular movement habit then (2 years ago), this time her doctor was recommending Fosamax. Kimberly still wants to see what she can do in addition to the medication. I will do some additional research around osteoporosis and exercise, seeing as I am a certified personal trainer and it is within my scope of practice, to offer some ideas. I also want to spend more time on pranayama and pratyahara when we meet again next week. I am considering her for my Capstone project - we can discuss this more in our next mentoring session. |
