Core Module NameAdaptive Yoga

Plan Information

Selected key teaching (specific core concept):

Adaptive Yoga has taught me to adapt Hatha Yoga poses so that yoga is accessible to clients who cannot do classic Hatha Yoga.

Goal for implementation with client (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound relating to the client):

Client’s goal is to improve flexibility and agility. Meet for two sessions to teach joint freeing movements, adapted yoga poses and pranayama. First session will be recorded so that client can follow along at home. Practice will be for 20 - 25 minutes two days a week to begin with and increasing the number of days to three or more thereafter.

Relevant Client(s) Details

Female in her early 60’s. Client is a grandmother and takes care of her grandchild a few days a week. Client has the practice of 'walking' laps at the gym swimming pool for 40 to 45 minutes once a week for exercise. Client has joint pain especially in the hands and knees, and walking in the water is less painful for her knees. Client is overweight, and has some health issues which include asthma, acid reflux, and high cholesterol.

Session Outline
Practice/Activity (5 words or less) Amount of time (in minutes)
Intake Session 1 hour
Two Adaptive Yoga Sessions including joint freeing movements and chair yoga 1 hour each
Pranayama 5 minutes

Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

We met twice. Intake was completed prior to first meeting.

The following practices were given:
Pranayama (Dirgha Svasan) – 5 minutes
Adapted Yoga Routine included: Joint Freeing Movements
and Chair yoga – 40 minutes

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

Hatha Yoga was used to work on the Annamaya and Pranamaya Kosha. The tools used were pranayama Dirgha Svasan, joint freeing movements and chair yoga to assist the client to improving flexibility and agility.

Short notes on time with client:

Client reported that she has been unable to practice any of the activities during the first week because she was not able to sleep well all week long. This also impacted her ability to practice ‘walking’ laps at the gym swimming pool and to care for her grandchild.

Client reported that she was able to practice a few of the joint freeing movements for the hands and a few chair yoga seated positions once during the second week. She has not been able to do more because she has been very busy.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

Practitioner suggested that the client continue to practice on her own at least twice a week, and on the weeks that she is unable to do the ‘walking’ laps at the gym swimming pool, to do an additional practice of the Adapted Yoga routine provided to her. Client was guided to notice if she found any improvement in being more flexible and/or in being able to sleep on the days that she was able to do her practices.

Additionally, practitioner asked the client if we can meet again to follow-up and perhaps modify some of the adapted poses given. She agreed.

Client was provided with copies of scientific articles on yoga that are relevant to her needs. These articles discussed the following:
Effects of yoga on sleep quality and depression in elders in assisted living facilities; and, Silver yoga exercises improved physical fitness of transitional frail elders.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

Yes. The client was able to practice and ask questions about the joint freeing movements and chair yoga poses during the sessions when we met. Additionally, the client received detailed written instructions with pictures of the joint freeing movements and chair yoga poses. Practitioner and the client carefully reviewed the instructions and pictures to ensure that the client could understand and practice them on her own. As a result of this review, a few instructions were modified with the guidance of the client to make it more clear for her to use.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

Initially the client had planned to record the joint freeing movements and chair yoga poses on her phone but as it turned out, the client’s phone did not have enough memory to record. Instead of recording, the Practitioner provided client with detailed instructions and pictures of the joint freeing movements and chair yoga poses as was described above.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

Yes, I would approach it in the same way. I felt this client needed a lot of understanding. Approaching the client with understanding, patience and love has been important in this relationship. Understanding the challenges that the client goes through as well as her needs has been important to the client. Letting the client know that she is supported and cared about no matter whether the client is able to do her practice or not helped the client to feel at ease and to know that she is cared about.
