Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

Due to client's frequent lower back pain and periodic sciatic flare-ups, strengthen the area in and around the lower back through a forward and back bend, with adaptations that can be adjusted based on client's wellness.

Koes, B. W., van Tulder, M. W., & Peul, W. C. (2007). Diagnosis and treatment of sciatica. BMJ (Clinical research ed.), 334(7607), 1313–1317. https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.39223.428495.BE

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

Primarily hatha yoga with the asanas and modifications, and some jnana yoga with the knowledge and self awareness.

Short notes on time with client:

Client had limited hatha experience and never been with anyone versed in adaptive techniques. Client was very excited to explore props to find the perfect poses that felt comfortable.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

Client mentioned that the back issues often occur after multiple days of watching TV or working on her laptop from bed or the floor. Offered some alternative ways of sitting including the back jack or props/bolsters.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

Yes, plan was applied as intended and goal was met evidenced by client's demonstration of adjusting props during our practice.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

The plan worked as anticipated so no adaptations. My belief from restorative that the more props the better came to light during this adaptive session as trying various props proved very beneficial to the client.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

Absolutely, meshing my training in adaptive and restorative along with anatomy and physiology proved beneficial in working with this client. I would approach it the same way, but with the understanding that the next client may need completely different props base on their body to make the poses accessible.
