Client will maintain a journal to track fatigue, stress and sleeping patterns.

Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

Discuss the order of what is covered in the session and any client expectations.
Discuss maintaining a daily fatigue scale 1-10 assigns a number in the beginning/end of session to determine if practice is assessable and beneficial.
Begin practice with a one minute guided meditation on the breath [Manual, page 28] to center, ground and relax followed by a two minute gentle flow of chair sun salutation [Manual, page 54] while focusing on the breath for movement and body awareness and ending with a two minute deep relaxation body scan to release stress and tension [Manual, page 26-27].
Client provides feedback.
Discuss the importance of maintaining a journal to track fatigue, stress and sleeping patterns.
Discuss with client having a sleep schedule and ideas on creating evening rituals to promote a healthy sleeping environment [McCall, M.D.]
Discuss agreed time to dedicate to extended

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

Raja – pranayama to reduce stress and increase the energy flow.
Hatha – breath and movement to manage stress.
Jnana –journaling for insight and stress management.

Short notes on time with client:

Client cancelled the session due to fatigue but agreed to a phone call guided deep relaxation and body scan meditation. Client/I agreed I would silently disconnect the call after 5 minutes.
Follow up call, next day: client expressed how relaxed she felt after our phone session and requested a recording. I recommended Swami Satchidananda Yoga Nidra Deep Relaxation (youtube.com)
We discussed some ideas recommended on A Holistic Approach to Insomnia [McCall, M.D.]
Client indicated she is not interested in movement at this time due to fatigue but will reach out once she is ready to continue.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

None in this case due to short session.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

The intended plan was not applied due to client’s fatigue. The session was substituted with a 5 minute guided deep relaxation/meditation. I believe the goal was achieved even without the benefit of the chair practice, client indicated to feeling more relaxed.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

Yes. I learned that any practice is better than no practice. I’ve learned not to attach myself to the plan but to offer an alternative which is better suited to the client’s current needs.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

Yes, under the condition that I have an alternate teaching that is beneficial to the client.
Receiving feedback from the client that they felt more relaxed and asking for a recording recommendation means they are interested in the deep relaxation practice and are more likely to do it. This is great, I would not change this.
