Have you had a personal practice for at least one year?Yes
How long have you practiced yoga? Describe your personal practice of yoga and how regularly you practice, including the style/tradition of your current practice:

I have practiced yoga for 15 years. I was blessed to have private instruction for the first three years of my journey in yoga. My daily asana practice focuses on balancing the scattered energies of my body and addressing the needs of the physical body that day. I see asana as a preparatory practice for meditation (rather than the main event). I have a regular practice of Ayurveda, pranayama, systematic guided relaxation and meditation.

Do you meditate?Yes
How long and how often do you meditate?Everyday for whatever length of time I am able but at minimum 30 minutes (mostly more though)
What other training experience have you had since 200hr teacher training?

I received my 500hr certification in 2014 from The Himalayan Institute in Honesdale PA; I have attended multiple other trainings, including training in yoga nidra, yoga philosophy, the study of tantra, Ayurveda, yoga and the mind, yoga to transform trauma and many others - much of this was through The Himalayan Institute. I typically complete 3-4 15-20hr immersion trainings (weekend/extended weekend) each year (except for 2020 because of COVID). I have a deep passion for yoga and Ayurveda and its ability to heal and transform

What other styles/traditions of Yoga have you practiced/studied?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga; Himalayana Institute; American Viniyoga; ParaYoga; Anusara Yoga

Essay QuestionsPlease answer the following open-ended questions fully and concisely.
Please describe your past/current Yoga teaching experience including location, timeframe, population taught, etc.

I began teaching yoga in 2011. From 2011-2013 I taught yoga in studios in the Central Ohio area. In 2013, I opened my first yoga studio in downtown Columbus with the intention to teach lunch time yoga classes for 'reset' and 'stress reduction'. In time, the student base seemed to include many people who had experienced significant childhood trauma. I was led to study the effects of yoga on transforming trauma and began to study with Catherine Ashton in Chicago who created a program called Yoga to Transform Trauma. I also voraciously read everything I could about somatics and trauma including The Body Keeps the Score (van der Kolk) and Waking the Tiger (Levine). This led me to study very specifically trauma with van der Kolk, Levine and other presenters with NICABM. As is often so true, more and more of the students in my classes had histories of trauma. In 2013, I became a trainer for a 200hr Yoga Teacher Trainer (and then Assistant Director) with Laurel Hodory in Columbus. I taught 200hr YTT from 2013 through 2018 (about 250 trainees). I continued to develop my understanding of the relationship between the mind and our suffering and used the foundations of yoga to transform my own history of trauma and to serve the students who had been entrusted to me. In 2019, I wrote and delivered a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training for Balancing Owl Yoga in Dublin, Ohio and Mat Happy Yoga in Hilliard, Ohio. I have owned three yoga studios: two in downtown Columbus and one in Northwest Columbus (which unfortunately closed secondary to COVID). In 2020, I wrote and delivered an Advanced Yoga Teacher Training (Cherished Soul Yoga 300hr Advanced Yoga Teacher Training, registered school with Yoga Alliance). We had to convert to virtual format because of COVID but we did finish on time! 9 teachers completed their AYTT on December 6, 2020 - I am incredibly proud of all of us and our resilience and adaptability! Since 2015, I have taught private lessons as well as public classes. While I understood the 'therapeutic essence' of yoga, I was very careful to stay within my own lane as a yoga teacher. In 2016, I began to teach yoga (group class and private lessons) with Trauma and Resiliency Resources, Inc.'s Warrior Camp® program. This 7-day clinical immersion program addresses Military Moral Injury and combat related PTS in a retreat/community based setting. Many of the participants have attempted suicide (or at least considered it) and some multiple times as a result of Moral Injury experienced while in service of our nation. This has been a transformative association for me. I learned so much from each of the men and women that I was honored to serve. I continue to support TRR's mission and am hopefully one day soon going to be able to return to teaching at it's Warrior Camp® program. In addition, I have taught multiple workshops for the community at large and for yoga teachers (YACEP). My gift is that I can take complicated/complex ideas or concepts and make them accessible to the student no matter where they are in their yoga journey. I attribute this gift to the wonderful teachers that I have been blessed to study with and my own deep love for this transformative practice.

Which yoga therapy training programs have you taken?

I have taken Pranayama Unlocked, Meditation Unlocked, Yoga for Anxiety, Yoga for Depression (Gary Kraftsow, American Viniyoga); I have taken Three Wisdom Traditions (Katherine Templeton)

Have you taken any Yoga therapy training programs?Yes
Do you have any special interests or capabilities that may be relevant?

My specialty and focus - and my true passion - is the ability for yoga to transform trauma and Moral Injury. I have studied Moral Injury (primarily as it relates to Military Moral Injury) but also as it relates to physicians, nurses and aid workers. Again, I have been so blessed to be guided by some very wonderful teachers. I teach systematic guided relaxation, restorative yoga and pranayama that addresses anxiety, stress, trauma and Moral Injury.

Please list any other training or experience that you think is relevant.

My love for the human body has been a lifelong love. I studied anatomy and physiology in college and then in multiple workshops after becoming a yoga teacher. I have taught gross anatomy in 200hr YTT and 300hr YTT as well as workshops. When I was a litigation paralegal, one of my specialty areas was medical malpractice. I had the great blessing of having many many wonderful physicians who guided my education and who were generous with me. I have also studied and taught subtle anatomy and it is this that actually made more sense to me! I have a deep knowledge of subtle anatomy through both study and direct experience.

Please describe your studies and understanding of Ayurveda.

I started studying Ayurveda in 2012. I have taken workshops to deepen my understanding through The Himalayan Institute and Kripalu. I have done online trainings with a variety of teachers and have integrated Ayurveda into my daily life. I had the great blessing of a wonderful Ayurvedic practitioner who helped restore balance. I teach the basics of Ayurveda in yoga teacher training (both 200hr and 300hr).

Please describe your studies and understanding of yoga philosophy.

I am a true lover of yoga philosophy. I have studied with Rolf Sovik, Sandra Anderson, Pandit Rajmani Tigunait as my primary yoga philosophy teachers (what a blessing) but even beyond them I voraciously read yoga philosophy books from every tradition and look for the consistent concepts. I have a daily study of yoga philosophy primarily The Yoga Sutra, Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads.

What are your expectations as a student? What do you hope to gain, learn, or work on?

To learn another lineage/tradition; to expand my knowledge; to continue on my transformation and learn more ways that I can use yoga to heal the world

Why do you want to enroll in Integral Yoga Therapy Certification (IYTh)?

I want to learn more. I have directly experienced the therapeutic benefits of yoga. I incorporate the healing power of yoga in my classes, private lessons and teaching yoga teachers. I also want to explore another lineage. I believe that yoga is so vast a study and every lineage/tradition gives a different flavor/seasoning. I believe that everyone can be my teacher and that when I am open to new concepts or interpretations of what I have learned elsewhere it will widen my ability to be in service to others.

How do you intend to use yoga therapy in your practice, both personally and professionally?

I have not gotten there yet. I will definitely use what I learn to improve my teaching. I will start with applying what I learn to myself and my own transformation. I believe in the two adages 'there is a student for every teacher and a teacher for every student'; 'when the student is ready, the teacher will appear' - what I learn and apply to myself - and when I experience transformation through what I learn, then I am more able to use it to serve the people who are drawn to me as students/clients. So - for now, I begin with my self!

Given your current or future commitments, how will you create the time and space to achieve your goals for the IYTh program and fulfill all of the training requirements?

I have made the room in my life right now. I have had the wonderful experience of owning yoga studios (now closed) and teaching YTT/AYTT but now I am ready to be the student for awhile. I will be continuing to teach private lessons and small groups and at TRRs Warrior Camp® but this will leave a lot of opportunity for me to study and apply the teachings.

List any interesting things you would like to share about yourself

I am one of twelve children; I have two adult sons; I have three step-children; I am married to a supportive and encouraging man who will be a great asset while I am doing this study; I am well-established in my yoga community as a leader; I love nature and the earth; I am an avid hiker; I paint with watercolors; I am kind; I am able to establish healthy boundaries without guilt! I am passionate about yoga.

Are there any current scheduling conflicts or anticipated events that could affect your ability to attend any of the scheduled modules?

No.
