Essay QuestionsPlease answer the following open-ended questions fully and concisely.
Please describe your past/current Yoga teaching experience including location, timeframe, population taught, etc.

Past Teaching includes:
Yoga 4 Cancer, Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Washington Twp., NJ, March 2019 to March 2020: Class is offered to anyone who has ever received a cancer diagnosis and taught from an accessible/adaptive frame [I offer a multi-lane highway with options for shapes on the floor, on/with a chair, or standing].

Gentle Vinyasa, Chair Yoga at Kennedy Fitness and Wellness [both Mullica Hill and Sewell, NJ], June 2018 to March 2020

Beginner Yoga and Yoga for Strong Bones for adults [aged 18 to 80] at Experience Yoga Studio, Washington Twp., NJ, Oct 2018 to March 2020

Current Teaching [3/17/2020 to present]
I am currently offering classes via Zoom from an online yoga hOMe I created after the pandemic made it clear that while I couldn’t leave my house, that didn’t mean I needed to stop teaching. My last in person class was 3/15/20. At the time I was teaching Beginner Yoga, Gentle Vinyasa, Yoga for Strong Bones, and Yin Yoga across 2 gyms, 2 yoga studios, The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, and the Campus Recreation Center at Rowan University. I was driving all over creation and teaching 10 or so classes a week. Now, I offer classes via my hOMe studio: Hearth Yoga. Through the magic of Zoom, I was able to transition our weekly Yoga 4 Cancer class online without missing a session. My students took a leap of faith and we learned together [we’re still learning]. My commute is now 15 seconds [rather than 35 minutes one way] and so I am still offering ~7 or so classes a week but I am having so much more fun doing it. These weekly classes include: Adaptive Hatha, Yoga for Strong Bones/Osteo Yoga, Chair Yoga, Yoga for Cancer and either Yin or Gentle Vinyasa. Adventure Yoga [which incorporates Raja Yoga] and Guided Relaxation are offered on a 1X month basis.

Which yoga therapy training programs have you taken?

If you mean modules, I have taken the following via Yogaville [I have not taken any other Yoga Therapy programs]:
Adaptive Yoga TT [Summer 2018]
Restorative Yoga I TT [
Yoga for Arthritis I TT [Fall 2020]
Raja Yoga TT [Spring 2021]

Have you taken any Yoga therapy training programs?Yes
Do you have any special interests or capabilities that may be relevant?

I am a trained research psychologist and have worked with patients and practitioners studying chronic illness management and self-regulation since 2001. My thesis and dissertation both focused on asthma management. I currently teach at Rowan University and offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Health Psychology and Research Methods. I love learning and teaching.

Please list any other training or experience that you think is relevant.

Please describe your studies and understanding of Ayurveda.

I had limited exposure to Ayurveda in my 200HR TT. It was referenced in my RCYT and Yoga for Arthritis trainings but I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to study it with Durga Leela.

Please describe your studies and understanding of yoga philosophy.

My goodness. I can tell you that thanks to the wonderful Raja Yoga TT with this spring with Swami Karunananda and Swami Priyaananda and the wonderful Raja Team, I know more now than I ever did AND how to apply it to everyday life. The stilling of the mindstuff is yoga--This wonderful definition sets the stage for yoga to be practiced by all, everywhere, no matter size, shape, experience level. There is a way/path to peace for everyone and a skilled Yoga Therapist helps find the path.

What are your expectations as a student? What do you hope to gain, learn, or work on?

There's a fine line between offering a class in general and offering a program that is tailored and part of a treatment plan. As a yoga therapist I would expect to be able to do the latter. I expect to learn how to conduct an assessment/intake that would inform a treatment plan that is both evidence based and collaborative, honoring the client where they are and their goals. I would like to increase my competence and confidence RE: systems of the body and biomechanics AND energetic systems [koshas]. I want to continue to develop creative ways to meet students where they are.

Why do you want to enroll in Integral Yoga Therapy Certification (IYTh)?

As a research psychologist and a yoga teacher I have worked hard to "stay in my lane." Countless times, students have asked me for what amounts to medical advice and countless times I have listened, and then carefully pointed out that I am "not that kind of doctor" and encouraged them to seek some form of medical care. I understand that as a Yoga Therapist I would still have that conversation but would have a wider set of tools to complement whatever their medical doctor might recommend. As I understand it, Yoga Therapists work with clients one on one, in small groups, and in a variety of settings including clinics, hospitals, treatment centers. For me, the motivation to do this now is that this past year helped me to see what yoga can do. I saw how it helped me and how it helped the wonderful students who joined me online from the comfort of their homes. I would like to be better equipped to offer help and welcome the opportunity to collaborate with medical teams to serve others.

How do you intend to use yoga therapy in your practice, both personally and professionally?

I have already benefitted a great deal from the courses I have taken through Yogaville that are part to the Yoga Therapy curriculum. Taking Adaptive Yoga TT changed my life. I was like a kid in a candy store. On the heels of my 200HR it was EXACTLY what I needed to learn: that there is more than 1 "right" way to do things AND that no 2 students will be the same so why should the shape they make look the same. This seems so obvious to me now but it was revolutionary to me then and it guides every class I teach. No assumptions. Start from where we are and build. That said, I hope that I can continue to enrich my personal practice with lessons from yoga therapy and better serve the people who continue to seek live, online practice.

Given your current or future commitments, how will you create the time and space to achieve your goals for the IYTh program and fulfill all of the training requirements?

By transitioning to online teaching [for all of my classes] I have been able to "rediscover" time that was once lost to commuting from studio to gym to rec center. Currently, I set my own yoga teaching schedule and therefore with notice, I am grateful to say I can adapt, adjust, and accommodate as needed. The Raja Yoga TT was a good test of this system and I am happy to say that I passed.

List any interesting things you would like to share about yourself

As a kid, my parents were told that I either had cystic fibrosis or asthma...many tests later, we received the diagnosis of asthma as a gift. While I still landed in the hospital quite a bit, thanks to an asthma support group, I learned the power of the exhale. Through my research, I have tried to pay that forward and I think this is the next logical step to that goal. Stepping into a library, putting my hands in to dough or dirt all lower my blood pressure. I love reading, the smell of books, baking, cooking, and gardening. I grew up on a farm in Southern NJ and after some adventures, live .5 miles from where I started with a greenhouse, 2 wonderful puppies: River Bader Ginsburg and Hester Molly Weasley, and a supportive partner of 14 years this July.

Are there any current scheduling conflicts or anticipated events that could affect your ability to attend any of the scheduled modules?

My only concern at this time is whether there will be a future requirement for regular monthly meet ups at Yogaville--from NJ that would be tough. [Based on correspondence with Satya Lynn, this doesn't seem to be the case.] Via Zoom is no problem at all. Assuming that sessions will continue to be offered in the evenings and weekends, I will request my academic teaching to happen in the mornings. With notice I can be available in mornings if the need arises.
