Have you had a personal practice for at least one year?Yes
How long have you practiced yoga? Describe your personal practice of yoga and how regularly you practice, including the style/tradition of your current practice:

I have been practicing yoga for approximately 21 years. I began my practice in college, taking a yoga class as the part of physical education requirements. For many years I practiced with videos (Rodney Yee) due to a lack of yoga studios in my area. In 2012 I started attending classes at the Hot Yoga Lounge, a hot vinyasa yoga studio. This is the style I practice regularly (3-4 days a week) as well as teach. I also alternate between cardio and gentle weight training.

Do you meditate?Yes
How long and how often do you meditate?5-10 minutes in the morning, 3-5 days a week
What other training experience have you had since 200hr teacher training?

I am certified in Accessible Yoga, after completing a 30 Hour Accessible Yoga program led by Lakshmi Sutter at One Love Yoga in Palm Coast FL. This is a YACEP course through Yoga Alliance and it was completed on February 25th, 2019. By completing this course, I have a better understanding on how to share my knowledge of yoga in a manner that is accessible to all my students, regardless of ability or background, providing a safe welcoming environment for all who choose to practice.

What other styles/traditions of Yoga have you practiced/studied?

I have taken a few Hot 26 classes in the past, along with some specialty classes such as Acro Yoga and Aerial Yoga.

Is English your primary language?Yes
Essay QuestionsPlease answer the following open-ended questions fully and concisely.
Please describe your past/current Yoga teaching experience including location, timeframe, population taught, etc.

I began my teaching journey in 2017 at the Hot Yoga Lounge in Palm Coast Florida. Once completing my training, I became a substitute instructor for the hot vinyasa studio where I completed my training. At that studio we were encouraged to pick up as many classes as possible to gain experience teaching the different types and levels of classes offered. I also joined the monthly rotation for our Sunday Community Flow class, which was free to the community. I really enjoyed teaching this class as it brought many new faces into the studio. While substituting I taught a range of vinyasa classes from beginner to advanced along with the lunch time flow which was a non-heated class for retired students, that concentrated more on the understanding of postures and different ways to adapt them to their specific needs. I also assisted with a beginner's workshop and taught an acro yoga workshop with the assistance of my husband. I continued substituting until we moved in late November of 2019.

In February of 2021 I taught my first workshop at Bliss Yoga in Virginia Beach Virginia. We had begun attending the studio shortly after the studio opened back up after the state ended the Covid Lockdown. The first workshop was for acro yoga, then in April I also taught an arm balance workshop. I started working there regularly after my second workshop, teaching vinyasa flow two days a week, (Wednesdays and Sundays). The number of students gradually increased as the pandemic restraints slowly lessened and would range from beginner to advanced. There were beginner classes offered that I substituted for as well, if I was able to work it in my schedule at the time. Unfortunately, I only worked at this studio for a couple months, as we moved due to my husband being relocated to Pennsylvania for work.

Once we were settled in State College Pennsylvania, I sought out a new studio to practice in and had hoped to begin teaching again as well. Preferring heated classes for my practice, my husband and I started practicing at PYP Studio in State College. I began teaching heated power yoga classes on Wednesdays evenings in January of 2022. I substitute regularly for other instructors, and I was given the opportunity to teach on Friday evenings this winter, also a power yoga class. This studio is focused on offering different fitness classes to all who are interested, many of them students from Penn State University.

Have you taken any Yoga therapy training programs? No
Do you have any special interests or capabilities that may be relevant?

I would like to assist people who struggle with mental health and trauma especially younger in age. Growing up in a small town, these issues tend to be ignored or "shoved under the rug" and there aren't many outlets for those in need. Yoga has helped me work through many of my own traumas, and I believe bringing the teachings of yoga to our youth will truly benefit their future. Had there been more options in my hometown or nearby, of my classmates, and I would have benefited greatly.

Please list any other training or experience that you think is relevant.

The Accessible Yoga training completed in 2019.

Please describe your studies and understanding of Ayurveda.

I have read a book about Ayurveda and have a desire to learn more. I've listened to a couple discussions on some of the practices.

Please describe your studies and understanding of yoga philosophy.

During my 200 Hr class, we spent some time on discussing the Yamas and Niyamas, however it mainly focused on learning how to teach the postures, offer basic modifications, and understanding basic anatomy affected by postures. I have read some of Barron Baptiste's work during a 6-week workshop. During my own studies, I've been reading The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali along with some other books on different styles of yoga.

What are your expectations as a student? What do you hope to gain, learn, or work on?

I hope this program will assist me in becoming a better instructor and student. I would like to earn my 500 Hr certification as well at complete the program and become a yoga therapist. I am looking forward to learning more about the other facets of yoga. I believe the program will be intense but rewarding on so many levels.

Why do you want to enroll in Integral Yoga Therapy Certification (IYTh)?

To learn as much as I possibly can about how to help those in need through yoga. I have loved teaching over the last 5 and half years, but I do feel my abilities aren't what they could be. There is more for me to learn for my students. I am ready and able to take my knowledge and understanding to new levels beyond the postures and limited modifications taught in the 200 Hr certification and I am excited about the possibilities of where my yoga journey may go.

How do you intend to use yoga therapy in your practice, both personally and professionally?

I would like to use my certification to help my community. I live in a rural area where yoga isn't readily available, and many do not know the benefits yoga can offer. The closest studio to my home is 20 minutes way with very limited classes. The studio I teach and practice at is 25 minutes from my home and many of the instructors and students drive much further than I.

There are few outlets that I am interested in exploring, including the local veterans and the local schools. There are also a few other facilities that I have chatted with including a prison and mental health center.

Personally, I love learning especially about yoga. I am hoping to use what I learn in this program to continue growing my practice, so that I can further help others. Yoga has changed my life in so many ways and to have the opportunity to share that has been such a gift. The more I learn the more I want to know and share.

Given your current or future commitments, how will you create the time and space to achieve your goals for the IYTh program and fulfill all of the training requirements?

I have been working for the last year to put myself in a position to begin and complete my studies in this program. I have an excellent support system at home and if accepted will be making adjustments to my current work schedule, shifting to part-time or if necessary, leaving my employer to focus on my studies. I will still be teaching as much as possible at the studio and may pick up extra hours as needed running the desk. I have discussed the possibility of joining this program with my current studio owners and they are very supportive and will assist in ways they can.

List any interesting things you would like to share about yourself

Some things about me as a human: I have a very large Brady Bunch styled family, being the youngest of 7 children and a fraternal twin (brother deceased) and have 22 nieces and nephews ages 38 to 4. My hero is my grandmother, who taught me that kindness is the best gift we can give and receive.
Something yoga related: I send my family and friends yoga posture videos to help them with their practices.

Are there any current scheduling conflicts or anticipated events that could affect your ability to attend any of the scheduled modules?

Last I checked there were only a couple modules listed for the fall, and my one concern is that I do teach at 7PM on Wednesdays, which will conflict with the online module scheduled. I would like to discuss the option of a hybrid course program where, if possible, I may be able to take some of the modules at my home training location and some online. I am curious to know if all the online classes are scheduled on Wednesdays at 6:30PM (as well as on Sundays - no conflict with that at all). However, if I need to step away from my Wednesday class for a while to complete modules then I will do so.
