Essay QuestionsPlease answer the following open-ended questions fully and concisely.
Please describe your past/current Yoga teaching experience including location, timeframe, population taught, etc.

I began teaching yoga the month after I graduated from the Satya 200 hour TT. An opening arose at my hometown YMCA. I taught there until March 2020 when the pandemic hit and in-person classes were suspended. During that timeframe I also taught chair yoga at Juniper Village, an assisted living home; PYP Studio, a local yoga/pilates/fitness studio; and semi-private in-person restorative yoga classes. In May of 2020 I began teaching yoga online via Zoom to seniors. One of my passions is teaching yoga to incarcerated women at my county jail. I recruited four new teachers in that effort and am on annual rotation at the jail (online presently.). I have been a mentor for the Yo Soy Satya 200 yoga TT that ended in July of this year. My business is Light of Light Yoga, LLC. Presently my clients are seniors, professional and incarcerated women.

Which yoga therapy training programs have you taken?

Raja, Stress Management, Therapeutic Level 1.

Have you taken any Yoga therapy training programs?Yes
Do you have any special interests or capabilities that may be relevant?

My background in the visual arts and architecture; motivation to offer yoga to the underserved; Accessible Yoga.

Please list any other training or experience that you think is relevant.

Please see above.

Please describe your studies and understanding of Ayurveda.

I have minimal knowledge or background in Ayurveda, just some general/basic knowledge.

Please describe your studies and understanding of yoga philosophy.

Spiritual studies are the life blood of my yoga practice. Typically I read some type of scripture or commentary on scripture each day. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are constantly with me. I enjoy contemplating them and reading various interpretations of them. Recently I have been drawn to the goddess deity energies, reading some of Sally Kempton's writings and recently attending one of her online offerings. Though I have not formally studied the Bhagavad Gita, I do study it on my own along with portions of the Upanishads and the Radiant Sutras.

What are your expectations as a student? What do you hope to gain, learn, or work on?

I have mentioned some above. My expectations are to graduate with the skill set to confidently assess the needs of my students in all levels: from the physical to the subtle energetic levels and to create a plan of yoga therapy specific to each client's unique circumstance. Gaining these skills in the company of like minded seekers along the same path is extremely appealing as well.

Why do you want to enroll in Integral Yoga Therapy Certification (IYTh)?

I am pretty much already a senior and I primarily teach seniors. My husband is a senior going into his eighth year since being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. My motivation for becoming a yoga therapist is to better serve my students as they age and to develop my skills in offering private yoga sessions to this population.

As far as my choice of Integral Yoga, it is a matter of integrity. Integral Yoga is stable, honest, holds high standards, is grounded in spiritual studies, is transparent; and is dedicated to serving all beings~ regardless of socioeconomic stature, gender, race, ethnicity, age or any other discriminatory category possible. I have found all those I have met from the Integral Yoga Institute to embody these qualities, whatever their role in the organization. These qualities are important to me.

How do you intend to use yoga therapy in your practice, both personally and professionally?

I think I mentioned the professional part above. As for the personal, I believe, among other things, this program will make me a better listener and develop my discernment skills. Both of these skills would be welcome in my relationships with friends, family and myself. I can how the program would create opportunities to meet new friends, develop new relationships and provide pathways to offer my skills to a broader range of people. There is a chance yoga therapy certification may open some doors into my local Central Pennsylvania medical community as well. We only have two other yoga therapists in my county.

Given your current or future commitments, how will you create the time and space to achieve your goals for the IYTh program and fulfill all of the training requirements?

My current teaching schedule will allow time for these commitments. I love to learn and participate in yoga trainings, so they are a priority in my life and I make room for them.

As for my husband's needs, that is an unknown. At this time he is almost completely independent as far as personal care. The progress of the disease if relatively slow and I have family who are available as the need arises.

List any interesting things you would like to share about yourself

I first came to Integral Yoga in 1993 when I was pregnant with my daughter and had recently moved to New York from Washington, DC. I recall that Integral Yoga was the only studio I could find that offered prenatal yoga. The classes were delightful. I felt so safe and at home at the studio. My daughter will be 28 years old in a few weeks. Those many years ago, the thought of teaching yoga never occurred to me. Life sure gives us delightful unforeseen opportunities! How wonderful it is to come back home and practice yoga at IYI once again!

Are there any current scheduling conflicts or anticipated events that could affect your ability to attend any of the scheduled modules?

Not at this time.
