| Prior coursework/training | Successful completion of a 200-hour Yoga teacher training from a Yoga Alliance approved school plus a minimum of one year teaching Yoga is required for participation in the Integral Yoga Therapy Program track to become a Certified Yoga Therapist. If you are not a registered Yoga teacher, but are a licensed social worker or health care professional who would like to supplement your practice with Yoga therapy techniques, you are welcome to join the program, but will need to first complete a basic 200 hour teacher training to be eligible to receive certification from the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). | |||||||||

| Primary 200hr Instructor | Ren (Vimala) Fields | |||||||||
| Have you had a personal practice for at least one year? | Yes | |||||||||
| How long have you practiced yoga? Describe your personal practice of yoga and how regularly you practice, including the style/tradition of your current practice: | I have practiced some aspects of yoga for nearly 30 years, adding asana and other limbs/practices when I began formal studies in 2014 with Vimala Fields. Until that point, my focus was mainly on Karma yoga, meditation and mantra. My RYT200 series introduced me to several yoga traditions and styles, but Integral and Ashtanga have most strongly influenced my approach to both teaching and my daily personal practice. During my RYT300 series, I was trained in Yoga Kinetics, which is not a style but rather a technique that is based in the 8 energy systems and can be applied to overlap any style or level of yoga. Yoga Kinetics classes and practices use an easeful flow, incorporating asanas, vinyasas, mudras, mantras, meditations and the like to strengthen the Aura, meridian function, radiant circuits and the electrics; and to balance chakras, the Ayurveda 5 Elements, Yin/Yang, etc. | |||||||||
| Do you meditate? | Yes | |||||||||
| How long and how often do you meditate? | 15-30 minutes daily | |||||||||
| What other training experience have you had since 200hr teacher training? | I recently obtained my RYT500 hour designation. | |||||||||
| What other styles/traditions of Yoga have you practiced/studied? | - Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Kundalini, Yin | |||||||||
| Is English your primary language? | Yes | |||||||||
| Essay Questions | Please answer the following open-ended questions fully and concisely. | |||||||||
| Please describe your past/current Yoga teaching experience including location, timeframe, population taught, etc. | I began teaching in December of 2016. Until now, I have mostly taught karma yoga, meditation and energy approaches privately (in-home or their office) and within my yoga Sangha, plus at some larger events to include a homeless persons' memorial in town square, for staff at the local SPCA, and in a studio/gym as part of my TT practicum. I have spent the most time teaching privately for a man in his 60s with Multiple Sclerosis and chronic back and knee tightness. My class makeup has been varied to include students of all ages and abilities, often within the same class. For example, one group included students in their 30s through 70s, with one having Down Syndrome, another having Parkinson's, and yet others had knee and hip challenges. Most needed some modification to their practice. This month, I begin teaching as a contractor at a 55+ private club / apartment complex where most residents are reported to be in their 70s. | |||||||||
| Have you taken any Yoga therapy training programs? | No | |||||||||
| Do you have any special interests or capabilities that may be relevant? | I am Vegan, with some challenges related to gluten and soy that I have learned to navigate with Ayurveda since 2014. Ayurveda has also allowed me to eliminate seasonal allergies and to more skillfully navigate hormonal changes. I share as requested with friends, family and acquaintances techniques that have worked for me. | |||||||||
| Please list any other training or experience that you think is relevant. | Part of my masters degree coursework involved being trained in creating guided meditations and in leading group counseling. I have also received my Yoga Alliance RYT500. My understanding is that although my 300 series was, as I would describe it, based very strongly in a therapeutic approach, the program and classes have not been yet approved as yoga therapy curriculum. | |||||||||
| Please describe your studies and understanding of Ayurveda. | I understand Ayurveda to be a sister science to Yoga that targets the balance of mind, body and soul. Since beginning my yoga training in 2014, I have studied Ayurveda formally through multiple weekend forums with both Vimala Fields and her advanced practitioner guests, but really all training taught by Vimala contains an aspect of Ayurveda as they are really difficult to disconnect from a complete yoga practice. Additionally, I have self-studied through texts and other readings, applying to my daily life for 15 years. Ayurveda truly guides every hour of my day, allowing me to live a more whole and balanced life. | |||||||||
| Please describe your studies and understanding of yoga philosophy. | I am quite sure that I can't state it better than who has come before me. I believe yoga to be "moving into stillness," a quote I attribute to Erich Schiffmann. The mistake we make as humans is failing to understand that "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience." - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Our goal through yoga is to become aware of how our soul, mind and body cannot be separated from one another. We are not only trying to live our own lives with peace and grace but are creating a chain reaction that allows the world to quiet its collective mind and to think more clearly. I have studied primarily with Ren (Vimala) Fields, who has taught us in a variety of styles, but all of her approaches are deeply rooted in and inseparable from Integral Yoga. This has led me to a place where I don't "do" yoga; I "live" yoga. The yoga learning journey is never complete. We can only continue to uncover more knowledge to integrate what I believe is a 24-hour practice. I am a lifelong student. | |||||||||
| What are your expectations as a student? What do you hope to gain, learn, or work on? | I am looking to deepen my knowledge regarding yoga in general, but more specifically I want to prepare myself to be able to work with clients to equip them for life's challenges. | |||||||||
| Why do you want to enroll in Integral Yoga Therapy Certification (IYTh)? | I have seen the impact of concentrated yoga efforts in my own life and want to continue my journey so I may be better equipped to help others while I also help myself. Additionally, yoga can often be misunderstood as mystical vs. practical. Earning a certification from an accredited institution allows me to not only be a better professional but also assures clients that I have obtained the requisite knowledge and practical experience to safely and effectively work with them. | |||||||||
| How do you intend to use yoga therapy in your practice, both personally and professionally? | This additional knowledge will inform any yoga I teach, as well as aid my personal journey toward wholeness. Additionally, members of my family desire services, and I also want to broaden karma services for cancer patients and underserved populations. I am not adverse to also being paid for services in a clinical setting as that income allows me to give more fully to those who have financial constraints. | |||||||||
| Given your current or future commitments, how will you create the time and space to achieve your goals for the IYTh program and fulfill all of the training requirements? | I retired early from my primary profession in 2018 and am now self-employed with a flexible schedule and clear direction. I've worked to silo my life into the buckets that matter most and have done a good job of keeping my focus in those areas. | |||||||||
| List any interesting things you would like to share about yourself | My passions are animals and people. I have been a vegan for 10 years but started my total journey as a vegetarian nearly 27 years ago. I also serve as president of a local Rotary club. | |||||||||
| Are there any current scheduling conflicts or anticipated events that could affect your ability to attend any of the scheduled modules? | I am flexible in my self-employment as a consultant and keep a relatively light schedule to accommodate one non-profit board responsibility and my yoga commitments/involvement. This certification is an important goal for me and I am ready to prioritize. | |||||||||
| Please list three references we can contact regarding your IYTh application. One of these references must be deeply steeped in the Integral Yoga Tradition. Please provide name, position, phone, and email address. | All of the below have emailed letters of recommendation: Ren Fields (my YTT teacher) Barb Pischock Linda Marcus | |||||||||
| How did you find out about the Integral Yoga Therapy Certification Program? | Friend or Teacher | |||||||||
| Please provide specific website, studio, or individual names if you can, as well as any other specific information on how you heard about the program | My yoga teacher, Ren Fields of AHA Yoga, suggested I research this program; two members of my Sangha are yoga therapists; and I have stayed at Yogaville. | |||||||||
| What print and/or online Yoga and wellness publications you read frequently and what social media you follow for Yoga information? | yogaalliance.org | |||||||||
| Agreement | By submitting this form, I hereby declare the above information is true and accurate to the best of my knowledge. I understand that misrepresentation of this information constitutes grounds for the rejection of this application, expulsion from the program and revocation of certification. In the event of rejection, expulsion, or revocation of certification, I understand that I am entitled to no refunds, credits, or adjustments.
I agree to assume all risk of damage or injury that may occur as a student of Integral Yoga Therapy Certification. In consideration of being accepted as a yoga therapy student, the undersigned releases and discharges Integral Yoga, its teachers, and students from any and all claims, demands, actions of any nature, whether present or future, anticipated or unanticipated, known or unknown, that result from the undersigned’s participation in yoga classes or practice of yoga outside of class. | |||||||||
