Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

I envisioned working with this client every other night for 10 days, each session started with asking any questions or concerns and his quality of sleep. In the first session, I talked about lifestyle/daily routine modification to promote good night sleep.
I used 2 practices to relax and calm the mind, they are supported-child pose and Nadi Suddhi. I suggested drinking warm milk with nutmeg and honey 1hour before bedtime.

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

The branch of Yoga I used is the practice of pranayama & Hata Yoga.
Slow & deep breathing helps us to activate the parasympathetic nervous system to relax the mind and the body. Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama helps in reducing stress by decreasing cardiovascular autonomic parameters, distress is corrected and homeostatic balance is reestablished.
Supported Child Pose promote relaxation response, calm the mind, reducing anxiety and fatigue.
The benefits of lifting the legs include calming the nervous system, enhancing blood circulation, relieving the tension on the legs.

Short notes on time with client:

I invited my client to an in-person Restorative Class, it was his first restorative yoga practice. I explained the benefits of the poses and how to use props. During deep relaxation at the end of the class, I turned the heat on, this is actually for hot yoga, some of the students include him fell asleep. In addition, I used calming music, aroma, singing bowls in the class as well. I believe he learned that there are many items he can use at home that will promote his sleep.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

I would advise my client to continue to practice daily. In addition, I would also advise guided meditation before bedtime, there are many guided meditations with calming sounds on phone apps. And I will also suggest a warm bath 1-2 hours before bedtime, this helps to relieve muscle tension and improve blood circulation.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

My intended plan was applied, and the goals were met specifically to promote my client's quality of sleep. I think he learned a lot from the sessions. He said, "I feel relaxed in the morning last 2-3 days". He was able to improve his quality of sleep by a combination of physical and mental relaxation. Vata may get stimulated by too much activity, it is good practice to go to bed before 10 pm ideally, avoiding watching TV, or being on the computer for at least one hour before bedtime. This will prevent from negative effects of blue light and help to secrete melatonin that controls the sleep-wake cycle.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

I actually had to replace practicing supported-child pose with gentle inversion. After 2nd session, he was not comfortable holding supported child pose for 10 mins because of the pressure on his ankles. I suggested placing legs on the sofa and covering eyes with eye-pillow for 10 mins. This also has many good benefits includes activating the relaxation response and calm the mind.
I learned that it's better to check the client's physical ability before deciding the pose to practice.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

If I am faced with the same situation again, I will approach the same style. The reason is that physical and mental relaxation is the key to resolve sleeping disorders. I would like to include a useful Ayurvedic diet plan to make the program more effective.
