Plan Information

Selected key teaching (specific core concept):

When you regulate your breathing you can regulate your vagus nerve, this promotes a state of physical and emotional wellbeing.
The Article: Yoga and polyvagal theory.Effect and application for well-being by Marlysa Sylivan, goes into more specific details of this topic.

Goal for implementation with client (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound relating to the client):

The client would like to see her anxiety improve from a 6 to 3 on a scale from 0 to 10.I will invite for her to practice daily for 5 minutes deep diaphragmatic breathing in a 3 week period, calm to her nervous system, clear her thoughts and to develop and daily routine.

Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

I envision to check in with the client and to see what her goals are.I would like to teach my client diaphragmatic deep breathing so she can self regulate her agitated depression and therefore improve her emotional and physical well being..The breathing practice will help to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system so she can get to a balanced state and to get to a sense of wellbeing and reduce her anxiety. I will invite her to practice daily for 5 minutes for 3 weeks.

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

I have used the hatha branch of yoga. Diaphragmatic deep breathing slows down the breathing and decreases anxiety .
I have used the articles :
Yoga and polyvagal theory.Effect and application for well-being by Marlysa Sullivan
Psychophysiological effect and the applications of yoga breathing practices by Dipak Chetry and Shirley Telles
the book the science of breath by Swami Rama, Rudolph Ballentine, MD and Alan Hymes, MD , the book teaches about the science of the breath.

Short notes on time with client:

I asked her how she is doing, physically and mentally, her feelings and her emotions. What she would like to practice during our time together, if there was a practice she had found helpful. She states that she trusts my experience and wanted to follow my lead, but states that she has practiced some breathing practice in the past and she had found it beneficial for her so she would like to learn more about it.
I invited her to practice diaphragmatic deep breathing, since she already had some success with breathing practices. Her breathing was shallow and fast and she states that she feels nervous and restless.During our time together practicing deep diaphragmatic breathing she was able to deepen her breathing and to slow down her breathing, she became visibly calmer and more relaxed. She had relaxed her shoulders and her face softened. At the end she rated her anxiety as a 4.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

She states that she was feeling better and she would like to continue practicing. We talked about the goals for the next 3 weeks and what she wanted to work on. She states that she would like to continue with 5 minutes of deep diaphragmatic breathing daily for 3 weeks, since she did feel more relaxed after we had practiced together. She is realizing that it is very important to develop a daily routine. She states that she could set a timer on her watch as a daily reminder. She also states that she will try to decrease her caffein intake.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

Yes, I did apply the plan when I met with my client.I feel that the goal was achieved since she was visibly calmer and more relaxed , her face had relaxed , she speech had slowed down. Her breathing was deeper and slower. She states that she was feeling better and was even able to come up with a solution how she would be able to remind herself to practice breathing every day.Her anxiety improved and she had made a plan for her future practice. She rated her anxiety now as a 4.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

No ,I did no adapt my plan.I have learned that it is very important to be able to follow the clients lead she had stated that she had some benefits form breathing practices and she wanted to continue learning more about it. I feel she was more motivated ,because it was her idea and she trusted me and she felt that I was listening to her .I feel that it is so important to be able to listen to the clients needs and meet them were they are at ,instead of trying to tell them what is best for them.It makes for a better partnership and is ultimately more helpful for the client.I was also happy that she felt herself that she has met her goals and wanted to continue making changes to her life.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

Yes ,I would follow the same approach because I seemed beneficial for the client , she had a sense of accomplishment and this put her in a positive mindset.I was able to give her a book recommendation and the research articles ,so she was able to educate herself and this gave her a sense of self agency. She felt empowered that she was able to make changes in her lifestyle with a daily breathing routine. She wanted to also cut down on her caffeine intake to her her anxiety.I feel the session went well.I want to further educate myself and lean more about different breathing techniques.
