Plan Information

Selected key teaching (specific core concept):

One of the primary recommended reading HBED texts, “how healing works” by Wayne Jonas details 4 domains necessary to constructing one’s healing journey: 1-physical environment, 2-behavioral dimension, 3-social/emotional needs, 4-mind/spirit connection.
Jonas provides numerous examples of healing facilitated by small changes in the 4 domains.

Goal for implementation with client (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound relating to the client):

Reducing nerve pain and increasing physical activity w/the 4 domains
1-frequently change work posture & location
2-increase daily average steps (last month daily average = 4,756)
3-walk with someone 1x/weekly
4-yoga nidra 5x/week

Measure progress by step count and client reporting of pain.

Relevant Client(s) Details

53yo F, nerve pain from recent shingles, exacerbated by sedentary habits of WFH/online job. Addl: stress, migraines, hypermobility and bulging cervical discs.
Recent attempted changes include heart-opening restorative poses and transitioning to moving meditation for daily sadhana.
Ct reports nerve pain interferes with daily life 50% of the time.
The focus here is “move more” while also improving social connection and immediate WFH environment.

Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

The plan was to begin to implement some small changes in the 4 domains of healing in “how healing works”.
Participation in each activity or change would be noted on a chart, and check ins (in pain and average daily steps) would be recorded weekly.

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

Hatha yoga can be described as a set of willful and active practices that aim to achieve harmony and balance in the mind, body and spirit. Yogabasics.com
This plan aimed to increase mindful movement and mindful rest, and to begin to incorporate sangha in some regular (as in weekly) sense.

Short notes on time with client:

The activities seemed easy enough and the desired outcome is certainly an ideal and positive goal.
Any progress is good, and some progress was made. Perfectionism came into play and what seemed easy - wasn’t.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

Keep working on the goals, they’ll be beneficial whenever they are worked ‘towards’. Maybe break them down into smaller goals, or try for any one or 2 each day. Or try incorporating one and when it’s firmly established, then add another.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

The intended plan was applied. The goal was not achieved, although some progress was made. Those 4 simple changes were harder than they seemed like they would be.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

I didn’t adapt anything. It was disappointing from the client perspective. Lessons summarized below.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

I would want to set smaller goals, or just one goal at a time and add on when that goal was either reached or deemed no longer relevant (due to pain or injury or learning something new that made it make sense to switch gears.)
The ideas were good and were, no, ARE what is needed. So coming up with a plan went well. It would need to be broken down and the smaller goals prioritized.
