Plan Information

Selected key teaching (specific core concept):

Ayurveda emphasizes the right diet as the foundation of all healing therapies. Food is the first and most important form of medicine [Frawley 2009]

Goal for implementation with client (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound relating to the client):

The client will decrease the intake of tamasic foods and keep a daily food journal for one week to counteract the influence of tamas Guna.

Relevant Client(s) Details

The client, a 61-year-old male, complains of memory loss, lack of focus, and low energy. He spends 9-11 hours in bed, which may not all be spent sleeping. His diet is mainly processed foods, and he concedes to a sweet tooth, indulging in ice cream and granola bars daily. On the mental constitution chart, he predominantly aligns with the tamasic category. Client does not have a yoga practice at the moment.

Closing Chant.

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

Hatha – asana and pranayama to energize and motivate.
Raja – walking meditation – to improve greater awareness of the body and digestion.
Japa – mantra as asana for the mind.

Short notes on time with client:

Client discussed his food habits and how he feels heavy and tired most of the day.
We discussed the gunas and how to overcome the tamasic guna by avoiding tamasic foods and overindulgence and by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables that are light on the stomach.
Client feels he will be able to reduce the intake of tamasic foods and maintain a food journal.
Client enjoyed the practice session and feels he will be able to do the gentle yoga, pranayama and walking meditation on his own at least twice a week.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

Client to maintain a food journal for one week as per article written by Harvard Health Publishing.
Client to reduce tamasic food intake for one week.
Client to practice gentle yoga at least twice a week for 30 minutes for one week.
Client to practice Kapalbhati and walking meditation at least three times a week for one week.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

Yes, the client stated that he felt light and energized after the practice and after our discussion on the sattvic diet he realized how he had been overindulging in the wrong foods.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

No adaptation to the plan, however, I was apprehensive to discuss diet for fear of crossing the scope of practice for yoga therapy. I discussed only what is included in Yoga & Ayurveda [Frawley 2009].

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

Depends on the client as discussions of diet are always tricky. Yes, for the asana, pranayama and walking meditation as these practices are safe.
Receiving feedback from the client on ways they can improve their eating habits and energy level and what they are willing and able to practice.
