Report Information | |
| How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan) | Incorporate guided relaxation into the client’s nightly sleep preparation routine to elicit the relaxation response. Client was advised to listen to an iRest yoga nidra recording three to four times per week before bed for three weeks. Weekly in-person and telephone check-ins to appraise effectiveness of the technique and adapt the recommended course of action to attain intended goal. The 12 Minute Nap and Bedtime iRest Yoga Nidra for Deep Sleep by Dr. Richard Miller. |
| What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching? | Raja. Pratyahara, yoga sutras 2.54 & 2.55. Yoga sutra 2.46 reframed. “A healthy endeavor can be taken with a combination of effort and relaxation, by being mindful of how much effort one can make, while remaining physically and mentally comfortable, and when further effort will result in physical and mental strain.“ IY Stress Management TT Manual, pp 88. The Wellness Book by Herbert Benson, MD; in particular the chapters on Eliciting the Relaxation Response and Improving Your Sleep, Chapters 5 and 15, supported my guidance and knowledge base. |
| Short notes on time with client: | Email intake. Phone call about client’s needs: lack of sleep, interrupted sleep, anxiety. Shared two guided relaxation recordings. Client preferred the shorter one. Found it restful and calming. While reading about sleep, client expressed interest in stretching. We practiced chair yoga in person & discussed her life stressors. The client expressed feeling uprootedness. I recorded a chair yoga sequence, including grounding language. After familiarizing herself with the chair yoga movements, client stretches without the recording. She gravitated to stretching over yoga nidra. The guided relaxation helped relieve anxious feelings and provided affirming rest. |
| Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own): | - Keep up pre-sleep routine, incorporating gentle stretching consistently and guided relaxation as needed. |
| Reflection | |
| Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain. | Yes, intended plan was begun, then adapted as sessions progressed. Please see notes above. By the 3rd week, the client’s sleep improved noticeably. Before our sessions, the client would go to bed at 10 pm, wake up at 2 am and stay awake for about 4 hours, then return to sleep for an hour. After 3 weeks of guided relaxation and gentle stretching prior to sleep, the client still typically wakes up once a night, then is able to return to sleep within fifteen minutes. She then sleeps until 6 am. She is in bed for few hours and sleeps more. With better sleep, she no longer feels anxious, is more grounded, and better able to cope with life challenges. | Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn? | During our second check-in session together, through discussion and collaboration with the client, gentle stretching was added to the plan. Details of this evolution are provided in the Notes with Client section above. Lessons learned. |
| If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize. | Yes, start with a guided relaxation practice & add techniques as appropriate. By starting with just one technique, it is possible to discern its effectiveness before adding another technique. Open/frank communication. Active listening without hierarchy. Super determined/motivated client. Practices were effective. Integrate client self-reflection more fully into the plan. Client presented with anxiety, poor sleep pattern after major life changes. Guided relaxation was incorporated into client’s nightly pre-sleep routine. With client inquiry, a chair yoga stretch sequence was added. Client was able to reclaim about 4 hours of sleep each night. She still wakes up once a night. Now she returns to sleep promptly, within fifteen minutes or less, is in bed less & sleeps more. Better rested, her anxiety has lessened appreciably and she copes with life challenges more skillfully. |
