The clients job as an engineer has a lot of stressful moments, especially with one colleague , she is supervising. The goal is to degrease her anger and anxiety, from a 7 to a 4, when she has to be in meetings with him. This will be accomplished with the help of centering, deep breathing ,guided imagery and visualization.

Report Information

How did you envision working with the client(s) to incorporate the selected teaching? (Define the plan)

I planned to meet with her on zoom, I will teach her deep 3 part breathing and explain to her he benefits of deep breathing , how it is related to our stress response and fosters a relaxation response. How she can make use of deep breathing while in a meeting and people around her will not even notice her using this technique.

What branch(es) of IY did you use? How does each support your goal/relate to the key teaching?

I will use the branch of hata yoga with centering, deep breathing and visualization .
I will use the manual that was provided to us in the stress management course.I will start the session with centering and a body scan to help bring the client in the present moment.
I will also use the book the science of breath, a practical guide by Swami Rama, Rudolph Ballentine, MD and Alan Hymes , MD to explain the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing. We will then practice deep breathing together for 5 minutes,I will make sure that the client does not get dizzy with the practice as she does not have experience with deep breathing practices.
To end the practice, I will have her follow her natural in and out breath and have her visualize how new energy enters her body with the breath and to breath out old patterns ,that no longer serve her.

Short notes on time with client:

She was able to meet with me over zoom, she told me, that she was feeling frustrated because an other conflict she had with the team mate mentioned above. She was able join me in centering. We talked about the benefits of deep 3 part breathing. She liked the book: the science of breath .We were able practice breathing together and a brief visualization. She states that she enjoyed the practice and that she was feeling better than she felt before. Her personality style is very analytical and she does not speak a lot, but her breathing was notable a bit slower and she seemed more relaxed.

Follow up suggestions for your client (whether with you or on their own):

I told her ,she could easily practice the deep breathing on her own and the more she practiced it would become second nature to her and in times of stress she would not have to think about it.The interesting thing was that in the morning she had participated in a lecture series about wellness that her work was offering online because of the covid pandemic a lot of workers experienced more stress and part of the lecture was also about breathing and how different breathing techniques can be helpful to reduce stress.

Reflection
Did you apply your intended plan once you met with the client(s)? Was the goal achieved? Explain.

Yes ,I did apply the plan as intended and I feel the goal was achieved. It was a lucky coincidence that the client had attended a lecture about breathing and was made aware of the benefits. She really liked the fact that she was able to use this practice in stressful meetings and she could have an immediate benefit with out people noticing it.She is a very analytical and private person. Her being able to tell me that she was noticing how she was feeling better ,after she had a stressful interaction with her team mate, just before our meeting was an added benefit and really encouraged her to practice as she realized herself practicing beforehand would become an automatic response.

Did you have to adapt anything in your plan? What lessons did you learn?

No ,I did not have to adapt anything.I learned, how beneficial a simple technique can be and that is does not need to be very complicated to be effective.
I learned ,that depending on the clients personalty to be able to have scientific back up on the teaching is very helpful.

If you are faced with the same situation again in the future, would you approach it in the same way? Why or why not? What went well? What you might change and why? Summarize.

Yes I would approach the situation in the same way, it is great to have a simple and effective tool like a breathing technique ,to deal with every day stress and how we can use it in the moment and it is very portable we always have it with us were ever we go.
She liked seeing the book and being able to read up on the science behind it.I think for future reference it would have been even better if I had a handout that I would send to my client before the meeting with me so they can read it before hand.I was lucky that she had an entire lecture on breathing and wellness just before we met so she was very open and eager to try this out with me and she wanted to meet again with me to practice a bit more together.
